San Telmo is one of Buenos Aires’ smallest neighborhoods, yet it’s full of history and character. Known as the city’s tango, bohemian, and artistic district, it’s home to antique shops, art galleries, a historic market, cafés, restaurants, and traditional milongas—all within just a few charming blocks.

Getting Oriented

There are a few streets you’ll quickly get to know if you’re living in San Telmo:

• 9 de Julio Avenue
• Defensa Street
• Paseo Colón Avenue

And their best-known intersections:

• Independencia Avenue
• The Highway (25 de Mayo)
• Brasil Avenue

For the purposes of this guide, we’ll consider Plaza Dorrego, on Defensa Street, to be the heart of San Telmo. From there, we’ll show you exactly how to get to our school.

• You can take Line C (blue). Our closest station is “Av. de Mayo”, just two blocks away.
• You can buy a SUBE card and top it up at any subway station.
• You can also pay for your ride with a card or a device using apps like Google Pay or Apple Pay. Both options require NFC.
• The subway trip from the heart of San Telmo to our school takes approximately 15 minutes.
• Approximate distance: 2 km.

• Several bus lines connect the heart of San Telmo with our school, including 64, 24, 86, and 8, among others.
• The closest bus stops are located along 9 de Julio Avenue and Paseo Colón Avenue.
• All buses accept the SUBE card. While not every bus is equipped with it yet, many also support NFC payments using contactless bank cards or digital wallets.
• To find the best bus route, check schedules, and see real-time arrival information, we recommend using Google Maps and the free Cuándo Subo app, available for both Android and iOS.

• If the weather is nice and you’re up for it, you can also come by bike or on foot! Check out the city’s interactive bike lane map to plan your route.
• The ride from the heart of San Telmo takes about 10 minutes (2 km) by bike, while walking takes approximately 30 minutes. It’s a pleasant stroll and a great way to experience the neighborhood along the way.

• If you’re coming by car, the easiest route is via 9 de Julio Avenue.
• Keep in mind that driving isn’t always the fastest option. Unless there’s a disruption to the service, the subway is usually the quickest way to get to our school.
